Palette: Off-White + Blue + Silver
A new year calls for a clean slate. And this is exactly what this week’s palette reflects. Soft, creamy whites are decorated with lovely blues, and grounded with timeless silvers. January is a resting month for most. It’s the lull the proceeds after all the holiday festivities. This is the perfect time to turn on some jazz and sit back with all your favorites. Have a lovely weekend!

There is something lovely about gray skies. Sunshine is perfect, but I can’t help but crave for the imperfection of a beautiful, rainy morning in Shanghai, China. The way the buildings around you fade and the sound of the rain gently soothes you.

Emily and Tom are the lovely pair behind the friendly, cuddly felt creatures of Karmatank. Emily brings the bears to life, while Tom writes their biographies. Together they create their own playful world of tiny treasures and stories. They’ve shared a little about their daily adventures with us below.
WHAT SONG DO YOU LIKE TO WAKE UP TO?
KT: That must be the good morning song performed by our dogs Cedric and Bosphore. It goes something like this: “Let’s get up! It’s the middle of the day or something, I can’t tell because I have no watch! Bosphore, do you know what time it is? – No, I don’t, but it must be late. Why are they still sleeping?” And then they tap with their paws and knock at the walls with their hardy tails and yawn. This happens at around eleven.
YOUR FAVOURITE HIDING PLACE IN THE CITY & WHY?
KT: Home. It’s like the safest place in the whole city. And everybody can come and feel safe too. It’s also quite calm here.
NAME A HOBBY YOU ENJOY, OUTSIDE YOUR CRAFT.
KT: Videogames! And also collecting small porcelain animals. Videogames let you step back and remember what it is that you like so much about your craft. And porcelain animals make faces and have conversations.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK?
KT: Moomintrolls by Tove Jansson. All of them.
{Copyright Tove Jansson & Farrar Straus Giroux.}
WHERE WOULD YOU BURY YOUR TREASURE?
EM: Under a big tree.
TM: Up in the clouds.
MOST BELOVED MEMORY OF SNOW?
KT: Ooh, a tough one! Snow is the best thing in the winter. It turns nights into days. It dims the city noise, and pulls your leg when you
walk. So you better wear a helmet.
HOW WOULD YOU DECORATE YOUR IGLOO?
KT: We would use red berries and icicles. The icicles would go in the windows, with the pointy ends up in the air. And we would push the red berries into the walls, making a 360 degree zig-zag pattern.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WERE SNOWED IN?
KT: Drink tea and eat delicacies, like cookies and candies and pastries. And read books and watch movies and time after time look outside the window where all the not snowed-in people are hasting away their days. It’s awesome being snowed in.

In the past couple of months, Wendy has peed on two of my handbags. The first was a navy blue canvas bag, and the second was a giant brown leathery-type purse. Luckily, neither of them had important papers inside, and my cell phone, too, was blessedly spared. One had my laptop case in it, but no laptop, and the smell has faded over the past few weeks. I had to throw out a change purse, a pack of gum, and some index cards with Things to Do lists on them, but the damage has been minimal overall.
I’m more considered with the motivation behind these furtive acts. Wendy the cat has a generally mild attitude, which is what allows us to get along so well; she only yells at me once in a while when her food gets low, or when she sees me opening a can whose contents aren’t for her (such as cans of tomato sauce or chicken broth or pineapple), so I don’t understand – is she harboring secret resentments? Does she hate me, in her own quiet way?
Or is it instead a comfort issue? Perhaps she has gotten tired of the crumbly, biodegradable, wood-chippy product spread into that scratched up, plastic, ammonia-smelling tray, tucked behind a pink curtain of privacy I’ve hung for her to do her business behind; perhaps she has made the decision that once in a while, she’d much rather squat her soft cat haunches on to a nice, squashy handbag. As someone who always splurges for the multi-ply, I can’t say I wouldn’t do the same in her situation.
