Though I’ve always enjoyed watching movies, I’ve recently come to appreciate short films. With so much story telling to do within a short period of time, short stories need to capture a moment. Ben Briand’s Apricot does exactly this – captures an intimate moment. You get drawn into the story that enfolds between the two characters.

The Bee’s Knees – Olive Manna

Perhaps a tad cautious at first, Olive Manna’s Natalie Jost tells us that meeting new people is like swimming in uncharted territory. You simply have to stick your toe in first to test the waters. But when you get to know her, she’s a chatterbox. With a love for creating and experiencing new things, Natalie describes her children to be the best part of her day.

Flashing back in time, one of the first things she designed was a Christmas ornament made from hair ties at the age of five. She got up in the middle of the night, went to the bathroom, cut up some hair ties and strung them up on a hook. Determined, she wouldn’t go back to bed until her ornament was finished, left hanging on the tree. It was the beginning of her insane late nights – wide awake, designing and creating new pieces.

Inspired by everything that she’s surrounded by, Natalie believes nothing is truly original. She simply takes bits and pieces from life and puts her own twist on it. Whether it’s a paper clip or a tulip, Natalie makes each piece she works on, her own.

Her days are especially golden when her children are obedient. It’s on a day when she hears a cheerful little “okay, mom” that gives her the giggle fits inside. No matter what goes wrong on that day, if one of her daughters listens to her and willfully complies, Natalie knows she’s doing her job. With fresh baked snacks and drinks in hand ready for her children and their friends, Natalie would like to continue being the mom in the neighborhood who’s always home after school ready with the goods. She tells us that all she needs to work on now is the fresh baked part.

Sea Sew is Lisa Hannigan’s debut, solo album. Before her solo career, she sang in collaboration with other artists such as Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol) and Damien Rice. The beauty of Lisa’s voice is that she beckons you to listen to her story. You’ll also find that the instrumentals in this song is uplifting and comforting, reminding you of home. And as her voice coos you to a standstill, you feel as though everything will be okay in the end. So take some comfort in Lisa Hannigan’s song Lillie.

Palette: Ocean Blues + Golden Yellows + Soft Browns

This week’s palette consists of a variety of ocean blues, golden yellows, and soft browns. The warm weather has triggered my cravings for my favorite jasmine tea ice cream, and how can we forget the childhood favorite – soft serve ice cream and popsicles from the infamous white truck. The thought of basking under the beaming sun on the beach makes me reminisce of lemonade stands and the sound of gentle waves washing against the shore. I hope all of you get a chance to treat yourself to some ice cream this weekend. Have a wonderful sun-filled weekend!

I’ve been trying to keep up with everything but as of last Saturday evening, my faithful iMac has died. After all that we’ve been through the past 6 years… it was time. I’m trying to figure out if there’s a way to fix it but in the meantime I’m stuck. So today instead of posting the missing Tanti Baci posts I’ll update you on what’s going on with TPW. After a successful photo shoot, which took place two weeks ago, the images are now ready to post on ETSY. I’m hoping to have the small collection available on ETSY for Sunday but that’s only if I have a computer up and running.

TPW’s website is also coming along. It’s been a very long process but I think you’re going to love it. The new site will allow you to shop our products directly online. Some other things lined up in the coming months include another TPW giveaway. One lucky reader will win a set of TPW products from our 2010 summer collection! This summer we’re also looking to focus on some interesting DIY projects as well as some unique inspirations that will spark the artist in you – helping you set the mood for your dinner parties. And if you haven’t noticed, Wendy the Cat is back! Still furry and lovingly adorable. So make sure to read up on Wendy’s latest adventure!

Hoping you have a somewhat less stressful Thursday. I know I’m keeping my eye on Friday and looking forward to the weekend.

P.S. Don’t forget Mother’s Day is right around the corner!

The Bee’s Knees – Headmistress

Jillian Wood is the founder and designer of Headmistress. I find the name to be fantastically sexy and alluring. Not to mention, Jillian’s collection is a beauty.

After attending McGill University, Jillian found herself with a degree in Sociology/Political Science/Religious Studies and no idea what to do next. So after spending a summer in Montreal, Jillian and her boyfriend moved back home to Stratford, Ontario to save money in hopes to travel. In January 2009, they took off for the Edinburgh with a stop over in London. But they never made it all way to Edinburgh. Instead, they ended up staying in London for 9 months. And it was in London where Jillian started her business. She rented a stall at the Sunday Upmarket on Brick Lane in East London and began selling her creations. While interacting with customers on a weekly basis, her creations started to evolve so she quickly expanded her line to suit people’s tastes. From there, she made some wholesale connections with stores in Italy, Australia, Ireland and Taiwan. And it wasn’t long after, that Jillian decided to move back to Toronto with her boyfriend in October 2009. Today, Headmistress is sold on the website as well in 22 stores, in 6 countries.

But oddly enough, it was never Jillian’s dream to become a designer. In fact, she had wanted to be a writer and even deliberated on becoming a lawyer. While her entrepreneurial side has been instilled in her at a young age by her parents, the artistic side has been heavily influenced by her mom, who is a Ryerson fashion grad and an artist in more ways than one (cement sculpture, wood carving and sewing amongst other things).

Though Jillian’s recent works have been heavily inspired by textiles and prints, she loves pulling colour palette inspirations from fabric. Her current work is mostly feather based but her Autumn/Winter 2010 Winter line will transition to incorporate vintage fur. So it is outdoor pursuits as well as materials found in nature that continue to inspire her designs.

Jillian’s day is golden simply due to dogs. Even though her and her boyfriend don’t currently own a dog, they enjoy walking over to the unofficial dog park near their home to look at other people’s dogs. It’s a sight to enjoy as there are many different breeds and sizes of dogs all playing harmoniously. Though you may find it odd, there is simply nothing better. Jillian is also very fond of her parent’s golden retriever, Loxley, as well her sister’s new flat coat retriever, Winston. Dogs are, after all, man’s best friend.

Wendy the Birdwatcher

04:

I wouldn’t call Wendy the most active cat in the world (she is more of a napper), but once in a while she can have quite an adventure. The other day, we were in my bedroom – I, hard at work on my computer, and Wendy lounging as usual on the bed – when a gaggle of birds, or a flock of birds, whichever, landed loudly on my roof and on the surrounding trees. One particularly fat one landed right near my window, black feathers falling everywhere. I think it was a starling, judging by its unique coloring and gregarious personality. Wikipedia tells me starlings are “gregarious.” Never has Wendy reacted in quite this way to a bird: she got down on her haunches and trilled at it – trilled! – and I could see that she wanted very badly to pretend as though she herself were a bird, one of its fat bird friends. What a clever ruse, a cat masquerading as a bird, to capture it, of course, and chew on it a little, ruffle it up a bit. I, always looking for an opportunity to witness animal behavior up close, opened the window (there is a screen). The window is maybe three feet higher than the bed, but Wendy leapt – she leapt! – from the bed and up on the windowsill, squashing herself against the screen. All the birds flew away, and I had to help Wendy down from the window, as she didn’t have much standing room. She was a little angry, I think, and spent the rest of the day alternately napping and glowering.
